Strategy

The Cover 4 strategy is a defensive approach that transfers the majority of your risk from the 7 (6 combinations) to the 4 (3 combinations). By placing lay bets against the 4, you effectively cover all your place bets on the table, meaning only a 4 out hurts your position—the 7 becomes a push (minus the vig).

This strategy is designed to be scalable across any table minimum. By thinking in terms of units rather than dollars, the proportional risk and reward remain consistent regardless of your bet size.

The creator, JC, reports finding this strategy very successful both at live casinos and on craps apps, particularly at choppy tables. Additionally, depending on how the casino rates play, this strategy may dramatically increase your comp rating compared to just betting 5 units.

The Strategy

  • Assume $10 table for simplicity (strategy scales to any minimum)
  • Wait for point to be established
  • Place 5 bets of 1 unit each ($50 total) across the box, ignoring the 4
    • Note: $2 additional will need to go on the 6 and 8 for proper payouts
  • Place a 10 unit ($100) lay bet against the 4
  • After four hits, enough profit should be won to cover the original 5 place bets; at that time, take the lay bet down until a new point is established
  • If the lay bet loses at any time, do not repeat the bet until a new point is established
  • This strategy minimizes exposure risk while potentially increasing comp value
